The Curious Case of Tonsil Stones

Ever have the feeling that something’s stuck behind your throat and somehow you can’t get it out? It is a very curious thing, a pebble-like feeling that may annoy you with just being there. If you ever experience this, then you have tonsil stones. It is a dental issue that needs attention despite it not having the most destructive effect to the teeth, gums or mouth.

What exactly are these small tonsil stones? These are formed when debris and bacteria come together. A few findings also reveal that dead cells and mucous can also join in along as it calcifies into one mass right along the tonsils, at the back of the throat. This is why it is called tonsil stones, as the nook that this white lump is found is at the area of the tonsils. This concentration is a feast for bacteria, producing acids and sulfurs that make for the deep foul stench that tonsillolith is known for.

When it comes to the size or diameter of a tonsil, it depends largely on the length of time and the accumulation of debris and bacteria. A small stone is common in adults, even two or three in one area but it is rare to find a large, calcified one.

Since tonsillolith is a gradual problem, it means that it starts very small until it builds up bigger and bigger. You already have a small gathering of debris and bacteria and you don't even know it. A concrete indicator of the presence of tonsil stones in the mouth is consistent rancid breath or Halitosis. The bacteria that produces acids and the volatile sulfur are the two elements that make for the stench. Even going so far as removing these stones will discover that these have a rotting kind smell that accompanies it.

Currently, for ordinary cases of tonsil stones, it requires no special treatment other than manually trying to dislodge it out of the throat with the use of non-sharp picks or cotton swabs. Some people also gargle with warm water with or without salt to lessen the discomfort while prepping the area for tonsillolith removal. You will need a bit of help from someone when you can't detect it by yourself or you have problems removing it. If the stones are exceedingly large and already has symptoms, minor numbing may be needed to get it out using only a simple process of extraction.
